Too Close to Call

Maybe it's just me, but considering that all votes are not due until tomorrow (Dec. 8) and this is considered one of the closest Heisman races in the history of NCAA Football, is it possible that Reebok got a little ahead of themselves here?

I love Reggie Bush, but if I had a vote I wouldn't blink before casting mine for 'Horns QB Vince Young who, don't get me started, would win the Heisman at Running Back OR Quarterback. Needless to say he's basically the best on his team at both. Thanks Reebok for continuing to be a premier capitalistic model of supply & demand, but I truly hope these shirts end up on a 50 cent sale rack in Somalia. You think they can say, "Fight On?!"

Young? Are you nuts? It is over, Rebok got it right. Bush is going to win, and I promise that it will not be the closest vote ever. If you think that I am nuts (like I think that you are), then we will just wait and see. If it is a landslide (which it will be) I guess that I am right. If Young wins, or if it is the closest vote ever your right.
I know what you are saying about the QB vs. RB thing. Your uncle has been riding that horse for months. But Bush is better than Young. Period. Since when has the best player in the country on the best team in the country not won the trophy?
Hey this is fun. Lets pretend were on college gameday more often. I get to be Lee Corso. "Not so fast my friend."

Wow, what can I say other than my uncle more than nailed that one. But I'd like to reiderate again the reality that while Reggie was struggling midway through the season Vince was sitting out a large majority of the second half of football games while Texas' 2nd and 3rd strings continued to demolish opponents. People make the argument that Texas didn't play anyone this season... I believe this begs the question: who did USC really play? Notre Dame? Okay I'll give them that one, but remember that the Fiesta Bowl this year I believe will prove Weis and the Irish are a wash compared to OSU. Don't mistake me for a Buckeye fan, but I believe A.J. Hawk and Santonio Holmes could and should have their way with the Brady Bunch on Jan. 3. Once again, I believe Vince Young has more than earned the Heisman in both the statistical and intangible parts of the game. When does Reggie Bush have to step in the huddle and make decisions that will make or break a football game? Reggie's job is not to walk out there and lead the team. He has the reigning Heisman winner in front of him to do that. When USC falls it won't be blamed on Reggie Bush, Dwayne Jarrett or anyone else other than Matt Leinart. It's been said more than enough times that Vince Young's mere presence on the field ignites a confidence in his teammates that no other player in the last decade has been able to do. I'd be willing to bet Pete Carroll doesn't walk on the field of the Colliseum every Saturday and think, "if all else fails, we've got Reggie Bush." Sure, Bush is a threat in almost every facet of the offense, but Matt Leinart is the leader of the team. If Vince Young doesn't get the Heisman trophy this year I don't understand what the award is for. You said it yourself Paul, the Heisman trophy is traditionally awarded to the best player on the best team, and if you're still confused about who that is I'd suggest waiting till Jan. 4 to make anymore brash prophecies. So in the spirit of College Gameday, I'll play Herbstreit and ask Mr. Corso to remove the mascot head 'cause I think it's clouding your view! haha, Hook 'em Horns!

Chris & Morgan,

Wow. Chris you have some pretty interesting points, they are wrong, but they are interesting.

First of all, I am not sure why you interpreted "best" for most exciting. The truth of the matter is that he is the best player in the country. Quite frankly Young is probably more exciting to watch because you never know what he is going to do. But not knowing what he is going to do is a two way street.

I am not sure how you can honestly say that "I'm not sure how you can even compare the two--they play entirely different positions." If that were the truth then how could we ever give out the heisman? You would have to limit it to one position, or do away with it. And if you can't compare Young and Bush then what is with this:
"Is Bush a better runner? Yes. But is he a better passer? No way. A better manager of the offense? Hardly. A better on-field leader of his team? Nope. In fact, I don't think it's a stretch at all to say that Vince Young is a far more complete (better?) football player than Reggie Bush."

I guess that is how you compare the two.

Now I probably would be fasting and praying right now if you had not accused me of being what I like to call a "sportscenter bobble head." The truth of the matter is that I don't even get ESPN (I know I am living in the dark ages). Quite frankly I think that my two Texas buddies are guilty of this. ESPN loves Young and his Mike Vick style of football. Young gets hiped quite a bit by ESPN. The truth of the matter is that he is a great athlete and a good QB. He can make an amazing play, but when it comes to managing the game (which by the way is why you think that he is better[?] that Bush) give me Brady Quinn.

Two more things then back to the fasting and praying.

Everyone knows that you can't really look at the stat leaders in college. Sure Bush may have finished 3rd, but the two guys who finished ahead of him are from Wash st., and Mephis. You are telling me that they are better than Bush. By the way (if we want to actually look at stats) did you know that Young is not the best QB (by those standards) in the follow categories: yards, completions, comp%, and TDs. Those are some pretty big categories.

Finally, you guys jumped all over me for saying that USC is the best team in the Nation, and told me that I needed to wait and see. You gave me all kinds of neat little facts about who they played, and why one team was ranked higher than another. But what we can definitively say is that USC is ranked 1# in the nation.

I would like to think that in this debate I am relatively impartial. If we were talking a about a UF Gator this would not be the case. I would argue until I was blue (and orange) in the face for a Gator. Maybe, just maybe, some of that Texas blood is clouding your vision. Never mind, Texans are never biased toward their state. I guess that we will just have to wait and see (which by the way is what I meant when I said:
"If you think that I am nuts (like I think that you are), then we will just wait and see. If it is a landslide (which it will be) I guess that I am right. If Young wins, or if it is the closest vote ever your right.")

What we need to be talking about is the Baseball winter meetings.

Tell you what Paul, I'll give you $50 for everyone you can find who's willing to blame the Texas A&M game on Jamaal Charles and Romance Taylor. Please, set aside the Heisman trophy and Bush has hardly the pressure that Vince Young or even Matt Leinart feels every game. When Bush was struggling partway through the season who was blaming him? Obviously Leinart wasn't giving him the ball enough, or LenDale White was hot, or the O-line wasn't blocking correctly... whatever it was it couldn't POSSIBLY be Reggie's fault. But when Texas A&M has one good game in the midst of their pitiful excuse for a season, everybody, ESPECIALLY ESPN analysts talked about Vince Young like he was some chump poser. I'll say this again, the pressure on USC (though FELT by the entire team) is focused primarily on two individuals: Matt Leinart and Pete Carroll. The pressure that Vince Young has felt since about 30 seconds after last year's Rose Bowl to beat OSU, beat OU, and beat USC for the title I believe far exceeds anything that anyone else could possibly expect. Please let me remind you, I totally love USC and especially Reggie Bush (when they aren't playing UT :) )... but I think that while Reggie put up huge numbers in a few HUGE games, Vince Young was leading Texas with arguably more media and fan pressure than any of us can imagine, day in and day out, and I believe he will again lead them to the podium to hoist the ADT National Championship Trophy on Jan. 4. Do I believe Reggie Bush is the most talented Running Back in the nation? Definately. Do I think USC is one of the best teams of all time? I think so. But do I think Vince Young has done more than any voter could have ever asked for in EVERY game leading up to and after the incident at College Station? ABSOLUTELY. Both of these guys are men among boys on and off the field, class acts in every respect. But no one blames the soldier for losing the battle, it's always the General.

The wait is over. In a landside Bush won. It looks like 784 voters agreed with me, and 79 with you guys.

At least you still have an actual game to look forward to.
